WEDNESDAY 23 MAY 2007
SOCIAL PROGRAMMEBIR Welcome Reception – ZAPPEION MansionMonday 21 May 2007, at 20.00 Duration: approx. 90 minutes All BIR delegates, guests and spouses are invited to the BIR Welcome Reception on Monday 21 May, at the Zappeion Mansion. This evening is included in the delegate’s registration fee. The Zappeion Mansion is one of the outstanding memorial edifices in Athens, built with funds provided by national benefactor Evangelos Zappas, who dreamed that the Olympic Games might return to Greece. When the Olympics were revived in 1896, the Zappeion was used as the venue for the fencing event; and in the interim Olympics of 1906, it was used as the first Olympic village. The building, which is a beautiful example of late Athenian classicism, also has a historical connection with Greece’s European course: it was there that the signature was put on Greece’s entry into the Common Market, and it was also the headquarters of the Greek Presidency of the European Union in 1983, 1994 and 2003.
