Forging the future: AI, innovation and the circular steel economy

As the global ferrous recycling community gathers in Bangkok for the latest BIR World Recycling Convention, our industry stands at a defining moment. Around us, the world of steel recycling is being reshaped by market volatility, shifting trade flows and the accelerating drive towards decarbonisation. Together, these forces are changing not only how we work but also how we understand the role of recycled steel in building a sustainable, circular economy.

Our industry is not only adapting; we are also evolving. The next chapter of steel recycling will be defined by innovation and intelligence.

The convergence of global challenges demands bold, intelligent solutions. Among the most exciting opportunities before us is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) - a force that promises to redefine how recyclers operate, trade and grow. AI technologies are already beginning to transform our sector: from optimising plant efficiency and enhancing material quality to improving worker safety and facilitating data-driven trading decisions, AI offers the tools to create more efficient, cleaner and more competitive recycling operations.

Recognising this transformative potential, the BIR Ferrous Division has made AI the central focus of our October 2025 Convention programme. Our plenary session, entitled “The future of steel recycling: powered by AI”, will spotlight companies and technologies that are already applying digital intelligence to real-world recycling challenges.

While innovation drives opportunity, the realities of market volatility remain ever-present. The recycled steel market continues to face fluctuations influenced by global supply chains, energy costs, freight rates and geopolitical uncertainty. Understanding how to manage price exposure has therefore become a core strategic capability for recyclers.

To support members in this area, the Ferrous Division will host a special workshop in Bangkok. Entitled “Hedging strategies for recycled steel” and to be held on Tuesday October 28 (15:15-16:00), this session will bring together financial and commodity experts to discuss practical tools and strategies for mitigating risk, protecting margins and improving financial resilience.

The first three quarters of 2025 have once again demonstrated the resilience and adaptability that define our global recycling community. Despite uncertainty in the marketplace, recyclers have continued to prove their ability to innovate, diversify and lead. As recyclers, we are much more than suppliers of steel feedstock. We are architects of a low-carbon, circular economy - one that supports sustainable industrial growth and the global transition towards decarbonisation. Every tonne of recycled steel produced represents a tangible step towards reducing emissions, conserving natural resources and building a cleaner future.

By embracing innovation, data and collaboration, we can ensure that recycled steel remains the backbone of a truly circular steel economy - an economy in which materials are continually recovered, reused and renewed. Through the power of technology, shared expertise and a collective commitment to sustainability, the ferrous industry can lead the transformation towards a more intelligent and efficient steelmaking ecosystem.
