Release of two more recycled aluminium standards

China’s GB/T 38472-2019 “Recycled Cast Aluminium Alloy Raw Materials” standard has already been published and implemented.

More recently, two further national standards - GB/T 40382-2021 “Recycled Deformed Aluminium Alloy Raw Materials” and GB/T 40386-2021 “Recycled Pure Aluminium Raw Materials” - were officially released from under the jurisdiction of the National Nonferrous Metals Standardization Technical Committee on September 7 this year (see 2021 No.11 China National Standard Announcement); the implementation date for these standards is March 2022.

These latter two standards stipulate the classification, test method, inspection, factory inspection/acceptance, packaging, transportation, storage and quality certificate requirements, as well as order forms, for recycled deformed aluminium alloy raw materials and recycled pure aluminium raw materials. The contents are applicable to the melting and casting obtained after sorting and other processing treatments for recycled aluminium. They can be consulted under the full-text disclosure system of national standards.

Although the new standards are available, they are currently in Chinese; BIR is working on their translation and will be separately providing links in due course.

Recycled deformed aluminium alloy raw materials and recycled pure aluminium raw materials form an important part of the standard system for recycled aluminium raw materials, which aims for excellent quality (high aluminium and aluminium alloy content, less melting and burning loss, and low inclusion and volatile content) that can be put directly into the raw materials for smelting in conventional furnaces.

The two standards will provide strong support for the standardized recycling of high-quality recycled raw materials and guarantee imports of these strategic resources are of a high quality. At the same time, these will standardize and improve recycling levels for aluminium, promote resource conservation and their efficient use, and promote the aluminium industry’s high-quality sustainable development, thereby helping the non-ferrous metals industry to achieve the goal of “carbon peak and carbon neutrality”.
