Almost all transactional conversations currently include the term “tariff”. Recyclers must act with vigilance to determine shipping windows and Incoterm contractual terminology. The Trump administration has been toying with a range of tariffs on Canada, initiating but then often retracting levies of varying types. While tariffs on aluminium and steel products are in effect, recycled materials have been see-sawing. 

While tariffs were initially being applied, Canadian recyclers attempting to ship recycled materials into the USA were faced with duty charges at the border. Many turned their trucks around while others chose to pay the duty and later filed for reimbursement once the tariffs were postponed.

The recycling industry is expecting recycled materials to be included in the round of tariffs scheduled to be announced on April 2.
