Over the past few months, Canadian recyclers have battling uncertainty with regard to US- bound shipments amid the tariff tit-for-tat rhetoric. While tariffs remain in place in the semi-finished steel and aluminium sectors, recycled materials have been shielded.

Metal flows from the manufacturing sector have slowed. Recyclers are hearing that production levels are under pressure owing to tapered US demand. Although the automotive supply stream has been the most affected, other sectors are seeing thinner order books combined with conservative inventory stocking in response to the uncertainty.            

While taking a strong stance towards the USA in this tariff war, Canada is also attempting to strengthen its ties with the EU in talks to boost trade between both economies in a bid to increase non-US exports by 50% in 2025.
