The global economy: how rocky will be the road to recovery?  

As we embark on the final quarter of a universally turbulent 2020, the global outlook continues to be dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic toll of country lockdowns already instituted around the world aimed at stemming its spread, with the possibility of renewed severe restrictions to come as certain parts of the world - notably Europe - suffer a second wave of infections.

Both the International Monetary Fund and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development are largely pessimistic about the immediate and medium-term future, acknowledging the considerable uncertainty surrounding the global economy for the next six to 12 months.

To help make sense of where we are and where we may be heading, BIR has invited two renowned and familiar keynote speakers to shed light on the latest trends governing the global economy right now while also sharing their expert insights into the world’s financial and commodity markets:

  • Stefan Schilbe, Chief Economist at HSBC Germany, will talk about the global economic outlook in these times of COVID-19 and will ask: “Can ultra-expansive monetary and fiscal policies foster a recovery?”
  • Prof. Philippe Chalmin is Professor of Economic History at Paris-Dauphine University in France and author of the CyclOpe Yearbook, which provides in-depth analyses of the volatile but endlessly fascinating world of commodities. His presentation to the keynote session will be entitled: “World commodity market perspectives during and after COVID: doubts and questions”
