Tyres & Rubber Committee: Momentum favouring use of recycled rubber

Although end-of-life tyres (ELTs) provide a large proportion of the material handled and processed by the rubber recycling sector, the non-ELT rubber scrap market is also significant in size and highly diverse. The BIR Tyres & Rubber Committee’s virtual meeting on June 2 will review the different types of rubber scrap generated in the market as well as their estimated volumes and most common recycling technologies. Momentum is swinging in favour of recycled rubber as an ever-growing number of brands look to boost the recycled content of their new products, and so the meeting will also focus on some of the challenges to its increased uptake, including technical properties, odour and safety.

An interactive panel discussion on the Non-ELT rubber scraps and Main Recycling Technologies will bring together senior business representatives from both the tyres and rubber sector.

Speaker lineup:

  • Martin von Wolfersdorff, who already enlightened our audience at the last BIR event in October 2020, is a business scout, growth hacker and tire recycling evangelist. He is principal advisor at Wolfersdorff Consulting and currently works on tire devulcanisation and tire pyrolysis, a small but growing industry where he has 20 clients and contacts to more than 300 companies globally. His specialty is product and market development for recovered carbon blacks. Mr von Wolfersdorff worked in the carbon black industry with Cabot, in the custom colour masterbatch industry with Americhem and in the white pigment industry with Huntsman (Venator). He holds a Dipl. Ing. (Univ.) degree in chemical engineering from the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany.
  • Harsh Gandhi is the Joint Managing Director of GRP Limited, a material manufacturer focused on helping customers fulfil their obligations of responsible end-of-life recycling. GRP started as a tyre recycling company but has over the years transformed into a sustainable materials company. It operates across the end-of-life (EOL) tyre and plastic value chain to offer solutions in closing the circular loop for brand owners (tyre companies) and material manufacturers (plastic and rubber producers). The company runs a tyre retreading business, reclaim rubber business, engineering plastics compounding business and a rubber composites vertical. The company processes 70,000 tons or 2 million tyres annually, is a supplier to the majority of global tyre manufacturers and to several global plastic compounding companies. Prior to joining GRP, Harsh was a consultant with The Boston Consulting Group. Harsh is a member of Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and has formerly been on the advisory panel of the international rubber study group (IRSG).
  • Asmipudin Mohd Ali Jinnah is CEO of Malaysia-based Bridge Fields Resources, which started off in reprocessing of rubber tyres in 1998. Over the years, it has invested in Research and Development to refine the technology to enable conversion of various types of rubber scraps into high quality rubber gum for the rubber product manufacturers. In 2004, the Group moved to the new factory in Ipoh and capacity has been upgraded to the present level of more than 600 tons per month to satisfy demand. Bridge Fields Resources engages a unique depolymerisation process which can convert a wide variety of rubber scraps into high quality rubber gum. Major feedstocks for reprocessing include natural latex gloves, latex lumps both natural and synthetic, catheters and all other types of latex-based products. Bridge Fields Resources technology involves a combination of chemical and mechanical process without using heat. Without the heating process, there is no toxic effluent discharge and therefore is environmentally friendly apart from maintaining the rubber content quality.
