International Environment Council: Expert insight into latest recycling rules and regulations

The only certainty is uncertainty, recyclers often say. But to the list of sure things we should also add the constant stream of new legislation that impacts the recycling industry. This year is seeing no reduction in the flow: indeed, new Basel Convention amendments were introduced on the very first day of 2021 and have already brought complications for those trading in recycled plastics. Across the range of recyclable commodities, the International Environment Council monitors all of the new legislation that is proposed and implemented worldwide, and so its virtual meeting on 31 May will be the perfect opportunity not only to catch up with the latest rules and regulations but also to arrive at a deeper understanding of how these might affect your business.

The webinar chaired by IEC Chairman Olivier François of Galloo (FRA/BEL) will showcase guest presentations on a variety of topics.

Speaker lineup:

  • Julia Blees is Senior Policy Officer at EuRIC, the European Recycling Industries’ Confederation. She previously worked at a Brussels-based consultancy advising multinational companies on environmental, health and safety matters as well as at the World Bank’s Legal Vice-Presidency in Washington DC. Julia is a fully qualified lawyer in Germany and holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from George Mason University in Virginia.  EuRIC is the Confederation representing the interests of the European recycling industries at EU level. Through its various branches covering the vast majority of waste streams, EuRIC brings together national necycling / resource management federations and companies in lieu from more than 23 European countries active locally and globally. Ms Blees will be speaking on the EU Waste Shipment Regulation, with a particular focus on the EU Commission project of an export ban on waste to be introduced in June, resulting in the impossibility to continue the export of recycled material from EU 27 abroad.
  • Second invited guest is Aurelio Braconi, Senior Manager Economy & Raw Materials of the European Steel Association (EUROFER). Eurofer is located in Brussels and was founded in 1976. It represents the entirety of steel production in the European Union. The European Steel Association's members are steel companies and national steel federations throughout the EU. The major steel companies and national steel federations in Switzerland and Turkey are associate members. Mr Braconi will comment on the future rules for the EU scrap trade with regards to the carbon border adjustment mechanism in preparation and the export ban of the steel scrap already mentioned above.
  • BIR’s Trade and Environment Director Ross Bartely will be updating attendees regarding other changing international trade and environmental rules and regulations.
