Ferrous Division: Timely assessment of the major ferrous scrap market issues
Tuesday, 1 June 2021, 09.30 - 10.30 (CEST)

Stimulus packages and infrastructure programmes around the world have provided a welcome boost to demand and prices for steel, as well as for scrap. At this watershed moment in the global economic recovery, the BIR Ferrous Division’s virtual meeting on 1 June will enable a timely assessment of all the key factors affecting the steel scrap trade now and into the future, such as: the lingering effects of COVID; the role of China where the latest steel masterplan implies reduced output from 2021 to cut carbon emissions; and the impact of shipping issues and changes to import controls. And, of course, there will be the customary expert reviews of trading conditions from around the world, this time during the separate Market Pulse session on 1 June at 11.35hrs, together with the presentation of the 12th edition of World Steel Recycling in Figures.
Programme highlights:
- A guest presentation with a focus on the Asian scrap market will be provided by Lee Allen, Senior Price Reporter at Fastmarkets, with the title "Mammoth margins, high-grade premiums and the power of China: the Asia steel scrap markets in 2021". Mr Allen has five years of experience in the steel scrap markets, focusing in particular on China, Bangladesh, Japan and South Korea, together with the Southeast Asia and China steel billet markets. He has appeared on Sky News, BBC News and BBC radio to provide insight into steel markets and has previously presented at BIR, SGX and SEAISI conferences. Fastmarkets offers price reporting and intelligence services with over 130 years of commodity expertise, using transparent and auditable methodologies to report data and insights in a variety of industries.
- A subsequent panel discussion, which will be moderated by Mr Allen, features guest contributor Jiak Lim, Senior Trader at Singapore-based Zhejiang Metals and Materials. Mr Lim started his commodity trading career at Cargill Risk Management trading exotic structured product. He then moved to Trafigura to trade physical metallurgical coke and coking coal. In 2021 he joined Zhejiang Metals and Material as a Senior Trader in charge of international trade for coke, steel scrap and steel billet. Zhejiang Metals and Materials Company (ZMMC) is a large Chinese steel, iron ore and fuel oil supply chain enterprises, with sales of physical goods totaling more than 30 million tons and a total import and export volume of 2 billion US dollars. ZMMC is part of the WuChan ZhongDa Group, one of the largest bulk commodities circulation service integrators in China as well as a super-large state-owned enterprise under the direct control of Zhejiang Provincial Government.
-
Divisional President Greg Schnitzer (Sims Metal Management Global Trade, USA) as well as fellow Ferrous board representatives Denis Reuter of TSR Recycling GmbH & Co KG (DEU) and Tom Knippel of SA Recycling (USA) will be joining Mr Allen and Mr Lim for what promises to be a highly topical exchange on “The Scrap market today - Trials and Tribulations: What are the issues we’re experiencing today? “.
