Upcoming BIR World Recycling Convention: Stainless Steel & Special Alloys Committee: Making sense of challenges to stainless scrap trading

In what has been an eventful start to 2021, decent demand has been fuelled by a restocking of the stainless steel supply chain. However, uncertainty has permeated every aspect of business: nickel and scrap pricing has been volatile; trading has been hampered by a lack of container availability and prohibitive shipping costs; and regulatory moves - such as import duty changes and anti-dumping restrictions - have altered the economics and practicalities of doing business. As ever, the team of experts within the BIR Stainless Steel & Special Alloys Committee will aim to make sense of these various trends and developments at its virtual meeting on 1 June.

Speaker lineup:

  • Olivier Masson is Senior Analyst at Roskill, a UK-based provider of critical materials supply chain intelligence, which he joined in 2017 and focusses on the analysis of stainless steel and ferroalloys. Prior to this, Mr Masson has managed the European strategic research team for a major financial information provider’s corporate services group. He subsequently joined commodities analysis and consultancy group CRU in 2008 where he covered various markets such as aluminium, copper and stainless steel and spoke regularly at conferences. Mr Masson graduated from London’s City University Business School in 1995 with a BSc in Banking and International Finance.
  • Alina Racu is a nickel market analyst at Metal Trade Overseas, the Switzerland-based subsidiary of the leading producer Nornickel. Before joining Nornickel, she worked for almost 7 years at the market research company Steel & Metals Market Research (SMR) in Austria as a market analyst with focus on stainless steel and nickel alloys. Alina holds a Master degree in Business Consultancy from the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt in Austria.

  • Tobias Kämmer is CEO of the Oryx Stainless company, which was created through the acquisition of Capricorn Stainless B.V. of the Netherlands through the German KMR Stainless AG. Oryx Stainless is today the third largest stainless steel scrap dealer in the world. Prior to his position with Oryx Stainless Mr Kämmer was the CEO of KMR Stainless AG. Mr Kaemmer holds a degree in economics.
