BIR Ferrous Division:
"Unparalleled expert analyses of latest trading conditions"
Wednesday, 3 November 2021, 15.00 CET
The ever-dynamic ferrous scrap industry is never short of issues to debate at its international gatherings, whether it be pollution control restrictions on steel production in China, the crippling difficulties for exporters in securing shipping space or scrap price inflation that, at times, has forced some countries out of the queue of buyers. The BIR Ferrous Division’s upcoming webinar on November 3rd chaired by divisional President Greg Schnitzer (Sims Metal Management Global Trade, USA) will provide experts with an opportunity to assess not only latest trading conditions around the world but also the extent to which stimulus packages and infrastructure programmes can continue to underpin demand for steel and scrap.
More specifically, renowned international management consulting firm McKinsey & Company will be providing a presentation on “Decarbonization of the steel industry in mayor regions (Asia, USA and Europe) and its impact on the steel recycling sector”, jointly given by Dr Benedikt Zeumer, Partner, McKinsey & Company (DEU), and Steven Vercammen, Senior Knowledge Expert, McKinsey & Company (BEL). Dr Zeumer is an expert principal and senior expert in the Metals and Mining Practice, with a focus on steel, aluminum, and other base metals. He has been a pioneer in building the McKinsey’s proprietary metals-and-mining expertise, including building the McKinsey Metals Research and Information group, which synthesizes and analyzes industrial knowledge from around the world. Mr Vercammen joined McKinsey in 2004 and during his professional career, he has always focused on the entire steel value chain covering raw materials, steel production and consumption trends. Mr Vercammen has written several articles on the steel industry and the importance of scrap. McKinsey & Company is an American worldwide management consulting firm. It conducts qualitative and quantitative analysis to evaluate management decisions across public and private sectors. McKinsey's clientele includes 80% of the world's largest corporations, and an extensive list of governments and non-profit organisations.
A second presentation will be given by Scott Newell, CEO and Owner, Newell Recycling Equipment (USA), who will speak about the “Increase in use of scrap in BOF’s” . Scott Newell is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Newell Recycling Equipment, LLC, El Paso, Texas. He is also Vice Chairman of China Recycling Newell Equipment, Ltd. a joint venture manufacturer of all types of shredding and separation equipment located in China. Mr Newell grew up in the scrap business and for many years has been a leader in the industry. His career began by working in scrap processing plants owned by his father Alton Newell Sr. From the time the second Newell shredder was built in the early 1960s, Scott has had the responsibility for the daily operation of one or more shredding plants, in addition to the responsibility for the manufacturing company. Throughout his life, Mr Newell has been responsible for the design, manufacture and operation of shredding plants, including the direct management and guidance for the engineering personnel. He has written, published and delivered more than 100 technical papers explaining how to shred and how to design separation systems to create the greatest value and how to manage these types of plants.
The session will also feature first-hand market reports by divisional board members covering the main world regions and an update on the latest steel scrap recycling figures by BIR Statistics Advisor Rolf Willeke.
