BIR Barcelona Convention - Paper Division: Paper recycling: a sector never short on drama

After the exceptional price and demand levels recorded in 2021, some in the paper recycling sector may have thought that 2022 could not possibly compete in terms of drama. But as we all should know well by now, every new year brings its own surprises and fresh challenges, among them market uncertainty as a result of the Ukraine conflict, ever deeper supply chain disruption, huge increases in freight and energy costs, and stricter import controls on our industry’s products, notably in Malaysia. So are the upsides - such as e-commerce growth and substitution of plastics in certain applications - sufficient to keep paper and board recyclers busy and profitable? The BIR Paper Division meeting on May 23 chaired by divisional President Francisco Donoso, DOLAF Servicios Verdes S.L (ESP) will provide not only a timely snapshot of all the key factors impacting the paper recycling sector but also an assessment of future prospects as well as an overview of the latest statistical figures.

After a brief introduction on new European regulations regarding international movements of recovered paper by the recently appointed divisional General Delegate Manuel Dominguez Dominguez (REPACAR, Spain),
invited guest speaker Stein Ole Larsen, CEO and one of the founders of NOREXECO (NOR) will give a presentation on “Trading in cash settled financial futures on renewable recovered paper”. Mr Larsen has wide experience from banking and finance including CEO position in 5 financial institutions. He has been an initiator and supporter of several venture activities in the Nordics as well as board member and investor. Larsen holds a degree as a "trade economist" specializing in finance and international marketing from Handelsakademiet (Norwegian Business School) from 1988. NOREXECO is a regulated commodity exchange specialized for the global pulp and paper industry. NOREXECO offers trading in cash settled financial futures. These instruments are used to manage price risk for market participants like producers and consumers as well as being a trading opportunity for financial institutions and commodity trading firms. Together with strong partners like the European Commodity Clearing AG, Deutsche Boerse Group and Fastmarkets FOEX Ltd, NOREXECO brings market participants from many regions together around a common liquidity pool in an otherwise fragmented trading environment. Anonymous trading, transparency, guaranteed settlement and investor protection within a regulated environment makes NOREXECO an attractive marketplace for optimizing risk.
