Stainless steel, as we must keep telling ourselves, is a wonderfully versatile material with an undoubtedly bright future. But we could be forgiven at present for spying only a few positives in a sea of negatives. Economic pressures have been making consumers less willing to spend on durable goods while many infrastructure projects have been delayed or cancelled amid financial constraints - all of which spells bad news not only for stainless steel demand but also for stainless steel scrap. The US$ 64,000 question, as ever, is how long can recyclers expect to be stuck in the doldrums. Where, if anywhere, is brightness to be seen on the horizon?
Invited guest speaker is Hitesh Agrawal, General Manager at Jindal Stainless (IND). A highly accomplished mechanical engineer with a career spanning 28 years, his journey encompassed diverse roles in the cement, carbon steel, and stainless steel industries.
Starting in the cement industry, he built a strong foundation in industrial operations and engineering principles. Transitioning to carbon steel, he gained insights into steel production and utilization. For the past 17 years, he has been a key figure in the stainless steel industry, notably at Jindal Stainless, India's largest stainless steel company, making diverse and impactful contributions. Mr Agrawal's career showcases his dedication to sustainable materials and recycling in the field of mechanical engineering. His presentation will cover topics such as the role of stainless steel in the circular economy and achieving sustainability, key trends emerging in the stainless steel industry in India, the role of scrap versus nickel pig iron comparison for the industry in coming 2-3 years, and the key developments in JSL and their future plans for the next 3-6 years.
Second guest speaker Dr Gerhard Pariser, Group Sales Executive & Head of Corporate Development, Oryx Stainless (NDL), has been active for more than twenty years in the steel and raw materials industry.
In 2023 he joined the Oryx Stainless Group - a leading recycler of raw materials for the stainless industry - in Sales and Corporate Development. Gerhard entered the field of stainless recycling in 2017 and most recently was Vice President Strategy and member of the executive committee of an international raw materials and scrap recycling company. During that time, he also represented the recycling segment at the International Chromium Development Association’s industrial council. Gerhard is a well-known steel raw materials and recycling industry expert. He is a metallurgical engineer by training and holds a PhD of the RWTH Aachen University. The title of Dr Pariser’s presentation is “Recycled stainless – the key for green steel: industry challenges for a much sought-after product”.
