BIR Joins WTO Steel Standards Principles Initiative to advocate for recycling's role in decarbonisation

sspWe are pleased to announce that BIR has officially joined the WTO Steel Standards Principles initiative, representing the recycling industry in this important dialogue.

BIR will contribute to discussions around key issues such as the role of recycling – particularly ferrous scrap – in the steel sector’s decarbonisation and the importance of establishing robust, globally recognised standards for emissions measurement. Our participation reflects our commitment to ensuring that recycling is at the forefront of these efforts.

At the WTO Steel Standards Principles Annual Meeting in Villars-sur-Ollon on 12-13 September 2024, BIR will engage in conversations on:

  • Interoperability and recognition in emissions measurement, ensuring scrap is recognised for its environmental benefits
  • The global context of decarbonisation and the path to circularity
  • Priorities for common reporting and data frameworks, advocating for the inclusion of recycled steel emissions data
  • Synergies between recycling and the broader climate agenda

We look forward to contributing to these critical discussions and advancing the role of recycling in building a more sustainable and decarbonised steel industry.
