BIR Valencia 2025 – Programme announcement for Electrics, Electronics and EV Batteries Committee
Maintaining economic circularity in times of trade restrictions: Innovative industrial applications for used batteries and business responses to the Basel E-Waste Amendments
With new trade restrictions on recycled materials, as well as mounting tariffs that risk disrupting global trade – the electronics recycling industry must find innovative ways to safeguard economic circularity. This session will explore two avenues of response: the extension of EV battery life and the adaptation of electronics recyclers to the Basel Convention on E-waste amendments and ensuing trade restrictions.
These topics will be discussed and exemplified at the upcoming Electrics, Electronics and EV Batteries Committee (EEEVB) plenary session in Valencia on Tuesday, 27 May 2025 (16:30 – 17:30), chaired by Josephita Harry, VP of Sales for Pan American Zinc LLC (USA).
The session will begin with a focus on batteries, moving beyond recycling to examine market trends in reuse and refurbishment. Extending battery life before materials enter the recycling stream is critical to promoting circularity and conserving resources.
To address this topic, the session will begin with a presentation by Álvaro Rodríguez, Spanish Coordinator for The Climate Reality Project (ESP), where he will discuss market trends, as well as different applications for used batteries both in Europe and abroad.
Subsequently, two speakers will present various creative and innovative industrial applications of used batteries that are already making an impact.
First, Javier 
Cervera Alonso, Responsible for the Energetic Transition of Baleària (ESP) – a leading cargo and passenger shipping company from Spain– will give a presentation on the company’s two recently constructed ferries that run 100% on electricity and comply with Zero Emissions targets, while operating on the first green maritime corridor between Spain and Morocco.
As maritime transport shifts toward electrification, Javier will highlight the hidden flow of valuable materials that will soon become available for recovery and recycling in this emerging sector.
Germán Agulló Garcia, CEO and co-founder of GDV Mobility (ESP), will present his company’s role as the only 360-degree electric vehicle after-sales service provider in the sector, offering services that range from lithium-ion battery repair and reconditioning to the production of new batteries through recycling.
In the fin
al segment, the focus will shift to end-of-life electronics and the implications of the Basel Convention E-waste amendments for their trade and recycling. Federica Guerra, Environmental Compliance and Circular Economy Specialist at Sider Rottami Adriatica S.p.A. (ITA), will discuss the amendments and, using a case study, demonstrate how businesses are adapting to the changes in regulations.
This session will be highly inspirational. By showcasing current and innovative applications of refurbished and recycled batteries, it will provide context for the rapidly evolving EEEVB industry, while highlighting its adaptability to new regulations and shifting market trends.
