BIR Bangkok 2025 New programme feature: Workshop on “Hedging strategies for recycled steel”
Workshop on "Hedging strategies for recycled steel"
Tuesday, 28 October at 15:15-16:00
Volatility has become the new normal in the ferrous markets. From sudden shifts in global demand and trade flows to tariffs, regulatory changes and regional supply disruptions, prices for steel and recycled steel are moving faster and less predictably than ever before. For recyclers, traders and steelmakers alike, these swings can have a decisive impact on margins and competitiveness.
At the same time, artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming hedging practices. From predictive analytics that identify price trends to real-time risk modelling and smarter trading strategies, AI is opening up new ways to manage uncertainty with greater precision. In a market where speed and foresight are everything, combining traditional hedging tools with AI-driven insights offers recyclers and traders a decisive competitive edge.
That is why the BIR Ferrous Division has taken the initiative to hold this dedicated workshop, bringing together two renowned experts who will share their unique perspectives on the complexity of hedging in the ferrous sector.
Alberto Xodo, London Metal Exchange (LME)

Alberto Xodo is a Steel and Nickel Product Specialist at the LME, the world's foremost marketplace for trading industrial metals futures and options contracts.
With over 10 years of direct experience at the exchange, he will discuss techniques tailored specifically for the ferrous scrap industry, using real-world case studies to illustrate how futures can provide stability in unpredictable markets.
Harsha Ramesh, Pillar (USA)
Harsha R
amesh, CEO & Co-founder of the US-based AI company Pillar, will demonstrate how technology is reshaping hedging.
Dedicated to autonomous commodity risk management, Pillar designs systems that monitor markets 24/7 and provide traders with actionable insights and strategies.
By showcasing Pillar’s tools, Harsah will highlight how AI can make hedging more efficient, more accurate and more profitable.
This workshop, which will be moderated by Olatz Finez Marañon, BIR Trade & Environment Policy Officer supporting the Ferrous Division, will give participants practical strategies, innovative tools and a deeper understanding of how to protect their businesses in today’s volatile ferrous markets.
Join us on 28 October from 15:15-16:00 to discover how recyclers can harness hedging and AI-based hedging to facilitate trading practices!
