BIR reaffirms commitment to fair and transparent trade practices in light of market irregularities in South Africa

BIR has been made aware of reports concerning price-fixing practices among major steel producers in South Africa. As a global federation representing the recycling industry in over 70 countries, we wish to reaffirm that BIR stands, as a matter of principle, against any form of market manipulation or price-fixing practices, anywhere in the world.

Free and fair trade is the foundation of a healthy recycling economy. Any practice that undermines transparent market conditions ultimately harms recyclers, distorts competition, and threatens the long-term sustainability of our industry.

We are closely monitoring the situation together with our South African member association MRA (Metal Recycling Association of South Africa) and will provide appropriate support where and when needed. Our shared objective remains to ensure a level playing field for recyclers and to uphold the values of integrity, fairness and open market access that drive sustainable growth in our sector.

BIR will continue to advocate for transparent and competitive markets that allow recycling businesses to thrive – locally and globally.
