A new wave of policy – the future of global electronics recycling 

End-of-life electrics/electronics represent the fastest-growing recycling segment in the world and have become both a challenge and an opportunity for our industry. With more than 60 million tonnes generated annually – and volumes set to rise sharply in the coming years – the recovery of valuable materials such as copper, gold and rare earths is becoming increasingly vital to global resource security and the green transition.

Earlier this year, when the latest updates to the Basel e-waste amendments were announced, confusion and market disruptions ensued – particularly around the Convention’s Prior Informed Consent (PIC) procedure – thereby complicating further the overall framework conditions.

As the market faces changes and new regulations, the EEEVB Committee plenary session chaired by Josephita Harry (Pan American Zinc, USA) will focus on the latest policy developments regarding end-of-life electronics and will give a glimpse into where the industry is heading and how recyclers can rise to meet new challenges.

Dr Kees Baldé, UNITAR (UN)

As Senior Scientific Specialist Sustainable Cycles for UNITAR, Kees is a leading expert in the circular economy and e-waste policies. In Bangkok, he will present on the upcoming Global E-Waste Monitor 2027, known as “the textbook for end-of-life electronics policy”; the report maps global data on end-of-life electronics and outlines current realities, challenges and opportunities.

He will also touch upon regional projects assessing the availability and recoverability of critical raw materials from end-of-life electronics, further informing both policy development and industry strategy.

 

Federico Zanotti, BIR

Building on this global context, Federico Zanotti, BIR Trade and Environment Policy Officer,  will deliver a policy update, providing an overview of the implementation of the Basel e-waste amendments, which entered into force in January 2025.

Through a case study, he will discuss their implications for our industry – particularly in relation to the international trade of end-of-life electronics and non-ferrous recycled materials, as well as BIR’s work in this sector.

 

Dylan Roman, Niu Niu (MEX)

Dylan Roman, an Energy and Processes Engineer by trade and founder of Niu Niu, a supplier of critical metals extracted from end-of-life electronics, will showcase the company’s long-standing compliance with the Basel Convention’s PIC Procedure.

In a presentation titled “PIC as an Opportunity for Regenerative Urbanism and Urban Mining”, he will offer practical guidance on navigating the new Basel e-waste amendments but also demonstrate how preparedness for policy changes can serve as a competitive edge for recyclers.

 

Yousef Al Sharif,Sharif Metals Group (UAE)

In a final presentation, Yousef Al Sharif, who is the Manager for E-Scrap at Sharif Metals Group (ARE), will discuss end-of-life electronics and recycled metals dynamics in the UAE region, including shipments to the Southeast Asian market.
