Recycled steel: the strategic driver of the 2050 steel industry?

As the global steel industry pivots towards "green steel" and carbon neutrality, the role of recycling has never been more critical. However, while the long-term outlook appears optimistic, the sector must first overcome immediate challenges of protectionism, shifting trade dynamics and geopolitical volatility.

Before this backdrop, the BIR Ferrous Division is pleased to announce the programme for its plenary session on Monday, 1 June 2026 (14.00 – 15.00) in Gothenburg. Chaired by divisional President Shane Mellor, Mellor Metals Ltd (GBR), the session will explore via two high-level presentations whether recycled steel is truly the engine that will drive the industry toward its 2050 goals:

Keynote speaker:

The presentations will be followed by a high-level dynamic panel discussion moderated by divisional Board Member George Adams, CEO of SA Recycling (USA). Joining the speakers on stage to debate the industry's roadmap to 2050 will be:
