“This Spectre is different, Mr Bond!”

The spectre on the horizon may debatably be the greatest insidious financial criminal of all –  INFLATION!

In the nineteen-seventies, the curse of inflation ran rampant globally, reaching 14.5% by the end of the decade and inspired initially by the oil crisis, which saw a stratospheric rise in energy prices.

While comparisons with those alarming events may hopefully not be nearly as dire or replicated in the current situation, there is justifiable anxiety that both a combination of factors impacting presently on energy prices and a barrage of prognostications with regards to the upward trend in inflation are issues of clear and present global concern.

Consistent with The Challenge’s fundamental core mission to bring to both our members and our wider audience all tangential stakeholders’ issues that are both highly current and cutting edge, and given the potential impact of rising inflation and energy costs and supply would have on the recycling sector, our latest edition of The Challenge could not be more pertinent than our intended focus via an in-depth discussion and analysis of this lurking danger.

The Three Amigos – The Challenge host Michael Lion (International Trade Council Chair) along with the show’s two resident co-anchor contributors Mark Sellier and Murat Bayram will be joined for this vital and fascinating conversation by the ideal expert and commentator for this topic, the renowned and celebrated Professor Philippe Chalmin, whose knowledge, analysis and in-depth studies of the global commodity markets and their performance are incomparable and his insights will undoubtedly be invaluable.

Philippe Chalmin is a professor of economic history at Paris-Dauphine University where he is in charge of the International Affairs Master. He is a founding chairman of CyclOpe – leading European commodity research institute, which annually publishes the CyclOpe commodity yearbook on the economy and global markets. He was a member of the Council of Economic Advisors in the Prime Minister’s office and the chief economist of Euler credit insurance group. Mr Chalmin holds a doctorate in history from the Sorbonne and is the author of more than thirty books on economies, agriculture and food, history and international affairs.

The topic and its immediate urgent relevance will surely make this conversation and this  6th edition of The Challenge truly compelling and a must to tune into.  As always, the show is open to both members and all other stakeholders free of charge and will air live at 14.00 CET on Thursday, 17 February 2022 as well as available on subsequent recorded playback on the BIR website.

We can’t promise you the mayhem, thrills and spills of a Bond movie, but we are very confident the conversation and its narrative can help you to navigate the dramatic spectre of the impacts of rising inflation and the energy hiatus – definite reasons why you must tune in!

Register now and see you there!
