Plenary Session Ferrous Division: Will lack of confidence keep ferrous markets subdued?
For a business world that never enjoys uncertainty, the current array of geopolitical and macroeconomic tensions - ranging from the Ukraine conflict to US/Chinese tensions, and from rampant inflation to soaring energy costs - have proved particularly troubling. One of the first casualties of this uncertainty is confidence, leading to more reluctant demand for the steel made from our industry’s processed scrap.
And that demand seems to set to remain subdued so long as major uncertainties persist over, for example, Ukraine, gas supplies from Russia, the effectiveness of efforts to control inflation and the potential for new COVID waves. If we add in continuing fears of a block on free trade out of Europe that would leave an estimated 20 million tonnes of steel scrap looking for a new home, then it’s clear there will be much to analyze at the BIR Ferrous Division meeting in Dubai on October 17.

Lee Allen is a Senior Steel/Scrap Reporter at Fastmarkets with many years of experience in the steel scrap markets. He focuses on the scrap markets of China, Bangladesh, Japan and South Korea, together with the Southeast Asia and China steel billet markets. He has appeared on Sky News, BBC News and BBC radio to provide insight into steel markets and has previously presented at BIR, SGX and SEAISI conferences.
Sanjoy Kumar Ghosh, Head of Supply Chain, BSRM, Bangladesh, BSRM (Bangladesh): “Scrap demand in Bangladesh: Opportunities and future growth prospects”
BSRM is one of Bangladesh’s leading steel manufacturing companies, and is one of the country’s most prominent corporate houses. Over the years, BSRM steel products have been chosen for building major landmarks and infrastructures across the country. With one of the largest steel producing factories in Bangladesh, employing the best technology from Europe, the company maintains volume with uncompromising quality. Sanjoy Kumar Ghosh has been working at BSRM for the last 17 years and is now leading the Supply Chain department of BSRM Group. Before this role, he worked in several different areas of the firm’s supply chain including logistics, distribution and procurement. He holds a Masters of Social Science in Economics and did his MBA in Finance.

Mr El Doukhei has over 15 years of experience in the power and cable industry. Abdullah is currently a Senior Plant Manager at Ducab Metals Business, a “Made in the UAE” copper and aluminium solutions provider to more than 45 countries globally. He is a chartered engineer by nature with extensive experience focused on delivering results. Mr EL Doukhei has considerable knowledge and know-how with relation to operations, manufacturing, supply chain, production, planning and project management. He holds a Master’s degree in Engineering Systems Management from Kingston University London.
