Still feeling those more positive market vibes?

Last year brought some of the lowest levels of demand for stainless scrap in more than a decade. And so the improvement in early 2023 came as something of a relief: scrap demand in China was boosted by its price advantage over nickel pig iron; Posco’s major stainless mill in South Korea returned to production after suffering typhoon-related damage; and superalloy manufacturers were considerably more bullish about order prospects.

Even in previously beleaguered Europe, the mood and utilization rates of mills were lifted by energy costs coming off their peaks and a drop in imports of finished stainless products. But as we head into the second quarter, are the positive vibes still being felt after recent banking shocks and price declines for many LME metals, including nickel?

A mechanical engineer and economist, Mr Moll is Managing Director of SMR GmbH - Steel and Metals Market Research. He has been a successful market research specialist and consultant for the leading specialty steel producers in Europe, America, Africa and Asia for more than 20 years. He is present at most international specialty steel industry conferences, both as a participant as well as a frequent speaker, thereby enabling him to monitor trends and structural changes in the stainless and special steel industry, as well as related raw material industries (nickel, chrome, molybdenum, scrap, etc.).

“The scrap bonus and stainless steel scrap’s contribution to climate protection”

Frank Pothen is a professor of economics at the University of Applied Sciences (Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule) in Jena, Germany, and a senior research associate at the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy IMW. His applied techno-economic research supports the transformation of European industries towards climate neutrality and closed material cycles for more than ten years. He studies (stainless) steel recycling and the steel industry as well as on the global value chains.
