Non-Ferrous Metals Division: Competing distractions for non-ferrous scrap sector
Wednesday, 2 June 2021, 15.00 - 16.00 (CEST)
COVID continues to provide a backdrop to day-to-day business life, although the early months of 2021 have also thrown up an array of competing distractions: the prospect of stricter rules governing shipments of non-ferrous scrap to Malaysia, fuelling concerns that other ASEAN countries could adopt similar measures; the bedding-in of China’s new import system for recycled brass, copper and cast aluminium raw materials, leading to greater demand for high-purity scrap; container shortages and significantly increased freight rates; and the business impacts - both positive and negative - of elevated non-ferrous prices. The BIR Non-Ferrous Metals Division’s virtual meeting on June 2 will provide its customary surgical analysis of all the key issues affecting the non-ferrous scrap sector.
- Invited guest speaker Eric Tan, Founder & President of Malaysia Non-Ferrous Metals Association (MYS) and Director of SDM Speciality Chemicals Sdn Bh will provide an update on Malaysia’s non-ferrous regulations and economy development. The Malaysia Non-Ferrous Metals Association was formed and registered with the Registrar of Societies in June 2019 under the name of ‘Persatuan Logam Bukan Ferus Malaysia’, with the purpose of bringing together the Malaysian non-ferrous industry under one entity. Their objectives are: to align and standardize non-ferrous metals importation code with government authorities particularly on hazardous and non-hazardous waste; to play a role as communication bridge between industrial players and government authorities in order to promote goal congruence; to educate and self-police members to abide by rules and regulations especially on matters related to environmental aspects; to promote the blossom of upstream industry thereby encourages downstream players to invest in Malaysia; and to embrace global changes through interactive cooperation and work together with other associations in the world.
- A subsequent panel discussion moderated by Paul Coyte of Hayes Metals (NZL) will provide the opportunity for Mr Tan to engage in an interactive exchange with divisional board members Dhawal Shah of Metco Marketing (IND), and Murat Bayram, EMR (DEU/GBR), who will both bring to the table additional topics such as the current situation in India and an update on EU scrap processing.
- The update on the world market situation with regards to non-ferrous metals will be given in the framework of the Market Pulse programme on Wednesday, 2 June at 17.30 CEST.
